This painting is the result of my automatic painting process. I approached the blank canvas with no intention or plan and allowed the brush to flow and modulate along the painting surface suggesting potential structures and compositions within the matrix of arabesque gestural lines. In the case of this painting I began to see the form of a tiger emerging in the chaotic thicket of lines I had created in the primary phase of the painting process. I had unconsciously conjured up an abstract version of The Tiger Hunt by Peter Paul Rubens exactly 400 years after the creation of the original artwork. Once I recognized the similarities I began to consciously introduce objective elements of the original Rubens composition like the horse’s tail, the leopard and the spears as well as the fragmented facial features of the cavalryman atop his steed. The element of chance involved in creating works in this improvisational automatic mode is particularly exciting, as it allows me to discover the artwork as I am making it. I am free of the burden of trying to represent anything concrete. Within the world of these paintings matter seems to be in a dynamic state of flux and free exchange. Forms merge into one another and share their energy, matter and light.
